Advisory agents for the field, where the signal drops

An agent that only works on good 4G is a demo. The interesting design constraint is what happens on two bars, in a local language, in the middle of a season.

voice-first fallback
Advisory response
< 4s
Repeat usage
3.4×/week

Measured against a baseline captured before the work started. One engagement, not a forecast for another business. See the methodology note below.

The users are standing in a field or on a substation access road. Their phone is mid-range, the connection is intermittent, and they need an answer now, spoken, in their language. Every assumption a normal chat product makes is wrong here.

Designing for the bad case first

  1. Voice-first, text-optional

The primary interface is a call. Text is the fallback, not the other way round, because literacy and keyboard layout are both barriers.

  2. Cache the knowledge, not the conversation

Seasonal advisory packs sync when there is signal and answer locally when there isn't. Only genuinely novel questions need the network.

  3. Degrade to SMS, never to nothing

If the call cannot hold, the answer arrives as a message. The interaction completes even when the connection doesn't.

Repeat usage is the only honest metric for this category. Novelty gets you one call. Three and a half calls a week means it became part of how the work gets done.

Methodology and privacy

  • Clients are described rather than named. Where a quote appears it is attributed to a role and published with approval.
  • Figures come from a single engagement and are not a forecast of what a different business would see. Volume, data quality and process maturity move them more than the technology does.
  • Baselines were captured before the work started. The measurement window and sample for any figure on this page are available on request.
  • Where a number is illustrative rather than measured, it is labelled as such in the text.
