Answer

What must stay human-approved in AI bookkeeping?

The short answer

Anything that is a judgement rather than a match: writing off a balance, accepting a short payment as final, classifying an unusual expense, agreeing a related-party treatment, and every statutory filing. The agent should prepare each of these with its evidence attached and stop, rather than deciding and reporting.

The line is judgement, not difficulty

It is tempting to draw the automation line at what the model finds hard. The better line is what carries consequence and discretion. A complicated three-way match is a mechanical problem the agent should own. A small, easy write-off is a judgement it should not, because someone has to be accountable for it.

Reserved for a person

  • Writing off or provisioning against a balance.
  • Accepting a short payment as settlement in full.
  • Classifying an unusual or first-of-its-kind expense.
  • Related-party treatment and anything with a disclosure consequence.
  • Every statutory filing, including GST and TDS returns.
  • Any posting above the value or confidence threshold you have set.

What an auditor will ask for

Three things, in our experience: what evidence supported a posting, who approved it, and whether the threshold changed during the period. If your system can answer those from a query rather than a reconstruction, automation has made the audit easier rather than harder.

Where this stops being true

  • A threshold is only a control if it is enforced in the posting path. A threshold documented in a policy and not implemented is worse than none, because it creates false assurance.
  • Automation bias is real. If reviewers approve without opening the evidence, the control has failed even while the metrics look healthy, so sample reviews deliberately.

The human control point

A named finance owner who sets the auto-post threshold, reviews the exception queue, and whose approval is recorded against every posting above the line.

Can an agent file GST or TDS returns?

It can prepare and reconcile the underlying data, which is where most of the effort sits. The filing itself should stay a human, deadline-bound action with a named person accountable for it.

Where should the auto-post threshold sit initially?

Lower than feels efficient. Starting conservative and relaxing it against measured accuracy is recoverable. Starting permissive and discovering a systematic mis-posting three months later is not.
